About the Artist

“Since childhood, living in the lush Massachusetts countryside, I have always loved the outdoors.  I feel the landscape and paint that harmony I sense in nature.  I want my paintings to give the viewer that feeling of spiritual elevation, of oneness or wholeness that is found in nature.  To capture this feeling with broad brush strokes and vivid color is exciting and fulfilling.”

Janet lives in St. George, Utah and Door County, Wisconsin.  She says “ I love to paint the lush Wisconsin landscape with its rolling wheat fields, lush birch forests and sunlit hay bales.  I also paint the magnificent barns surrounding me in Door County.  They are an American icon and an intrinsic part of our landscape.  I try to capture their stillness, their essence…that spiritual quality which is universal and timeless.”  Her desert landscapes express her new love of the Utah-Southwest vistas.  With a more muted palette, she captures the vastness of the Utah landscape with large foregrounds or huge skies.

Possessing a seemingly insatiable appetite for art, Janet has traveled worldwide viewing art from many cultures.  She loves to paint the Provence and Tuscan countryside with its intense light that gives the landscape and her paintings such rich color.

Janet has a Masters degree in Art from the University of Wisconsin and a Masters degree in English Literature from Marquette University.  She studied with Wolf Kahn and Katherine Porter at the Vermont Studio Center.  Janet has won awards in juried shows at both the local and national levels. Her artwork is included in many private and corporate collections nationwide, including Northwestern Mutual, State Farm, Yale University, ITT Hartford, Hitachi Data, Milwaukee Athletic Club, Bank of America, Lockheed Martin and the Saint George Art Museum.

Presently, Janet Tenneson-McCarty is on the faculty of the Peninsula School of Art in Door County, WI and also teaches painting at the Blue Raven Art Studio in Kayenta, UT. She is represented by Juniper Sky Fine Art Gallery in St. George, UT, Edgewood Orchard Galleries in Door County, WI and Lake Country Gallery in Milwaukee WI.
